01 — The landing

It’s 05:58 on 6 June. Six thousand siblings burst out of the dunes and run for the sea.

Gulls strafe the beach, shells walk up the sand, ghost crabs ambush the chokepoints, and a raccoon tears through the crowd like a tank. You are one hatchling in the crowd. Get to the water.

They are a real simulated crowd, not a backdrop. Most of them die around you.

  1. 05:58 · Act I

    The Dunes

Out of the nest and into the grass. Ghost crabs hold the chokepoints.

  2. 06:00 · Act II

    No Man’s Sand

Open beach. Gull strafing runs, a creeping barrage, and the raccoon.

  3. 06:03 · Act III

    The Surf Line

The water is right there. The waves keep dragging you back.

02 — Known hostiles

Everything on this beach has done this before. You haven’t.

Hostile · Strafing runs

Herring gull

Larus argentatus

A long shadow darkens the lane first. Then it comes in low and keeps scooping hatchlings until its talons are full.

If the sand goes dark, move.

Hostile · Ambush

Ghost crab

Ocypode quadrata

It waits behind the dune grass at the chokepoints, exactly where the crowd has to funnel through.

Hostile · Armour

Raccoon

Procyon lotor

It tears through the crowd like a tank, and it doesn’t aim at where you are. It aims at where you’ll be when it arrives.

03 — Field manual

You can’t fight. You can be somewhere else.

Crawl
Toward the light, with four thousand others who want the same thing.
Dodge[SPACE]
A burst of speed. Use it to get clear, not to get ahead.
Hide[CTRL] / [RMB]
Pull into your shell and let it pass.
Get down
Drop into a tyre rut and everything passes over you.

One hit kills. Every death sends a whole new nest. About one hatchling in a thousand survives.

That is roughly the real number.
